Cubic zirconia is a synthetic diamond made from the crystalline form of zirconium dioxide. The material is hard, visually flawless, and usually colorless. It can be made in a variety of colors to also simulate other gemstones.
Because of its inexpensiveness, durability and likeness to diamond it has become popular to purchase cubic zirconia engagement rings and other cubic zirconia jewelry. In fact, synthetic cubic zirconia has become the most economically important competitor for diamonds since the 1970’s. The only other competitor is synthetic moissanite another diamond look-a-like.
Improvements have been made in recent years to cubic zirconia by coating the finished stones in a film of diamond-like carbon (DLC) by using a chemical vapor deposition. The finished material is supposedly harder, and more lustrous so more like a diamond overall. Because of the high percentage of diamond bonds in the diamond coating a finished coated cubic zirconia stone will actually show a positive diamond signature under Raman spectroscopy.
Another technique to improve cubic zirconia is to apply an extremely thin layer of metal oxide, usually gold, on to the finished stone. This creates an iridescent effect. Unlike DLC though, this effect is not permanent and the oxide layer can be removed by any abrasion to the stone.

The Awesome New Year

25 March 2009

Every Year we shop gifts for all family members on New Year Eve. I told my husband to return from office as early as possible so that we can go for shopping . Later in the evening my husband had called me and said that he cannot make it for shopping and asked me to buy gifts for kids only as the budget is tight. But to my shock I have found my husband along with his colleague in a jewelry showroom in the same mall that I visited. I was very angry with my husband till 12 in the night and dint speak to him until I found a beautiful golden necklace under my pillow as New Year surprise gift.

More Than A Gift

9 March 2009

Christmas brings in joy to everyone, but more to the kids. It was during one such Christmas, my mom started decorating the Christmas tree. She had lots of small gifts wrapped up and was busy tying them up. And not wanting to be disturbed she asked me to bring any gift, that I had got for my birthday, just a couple of weeks earlier, so that that could also be tied and displayed. I went in and came back after some time with a well decorated bicycle and asked her to tie it up in the Tree, much to her amusement and laughter.

The Prized Possession

27 February 2009

My son got a pet fish as a gift from his teacher on his pre school convocation. He named it rushy as it moved fast in the tank. After 6 months we had to move out of state and we gave the fish to one of our friends. A few weeks later it died and they informed us. When ever our son asked about his pet fish, we just said ‘it is doing fine’. Once we happened to visit our friends and my son asks them about his rushy. They said it grew bigger and bigger and did not fit the tank any more and they left it in the lake. My son is 8 years now and he still believes that his fish is going grow bigger and bigger and one day it will be the biggest fish in the whole wide world.
